The History of The Hobbit is a two-volume study of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, published in 2007

It contains Tolkien's unpublished drafts of the novel, with commentary by John D. Rateliff. It also details Tolkien's various revisions to The Hobbit, including abandoned revisions for the unpublished third edition of the work, intended for 1960, as well as previously unpublished original maps and illustrations drawn by Tolkien himself.

The first edition of The History of The Hobbit was released in two volumes:

Part One: Mr. Baggins

Part Two: Return to Bag-End

First in May and June of 2007 in the U.K. by HarperCollins, then in September in the U.S. by Houghton Mifflin, which also released it as a boxed set in October. The Houghton Mifflin boxed set also includes a new edition of The Hobbit with a short introduction by Christopher Tolkien, a reset text incorporating the most up-to-date corrections, and all of Tolkien's own drawings and color illustrations, including the rare "Mirkwood" piece.

NOTE: This book set comes wrapped in the original plastic wrap. Untouched, unopened. New In Box NIB.

This boxed set, "Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit, The History of the Hobbit," combines J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy novel "The Hobbit" with John D. Rateliff's in-depth exploration of the book's creation and evolution. "The Hobbit" itself tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a comfortable hobbit who is unexpectedly swept into an epic quest with dwarves to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug. Rateliff's "The History of the Hobbit" delves into Tolkien's manuscripts, drafts, and unpublished writings, revealing the fascinating development of the story, its connections to Tolkien's wider mythology, and the changes it underwent before publication. Together, the set offers both the beloved tale and a scholarly examination of its origins, providing a comprehensive understanding of "The Hobbit's" significance.

J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the classic high fantasy works "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." His achievements lie in his creation of richly imagined worlds, complex mythologies, and enduring characters that have captivated generations of readers. Tolkien's influence on the fantasy genre is immeasurable, shaping the landscape of modern literature and inspiring countless authors and artists. His academic work in philology and his deep knowledge of language and mythology contributed to the depth and complexity of his fictional creations, solidifying his place as a literary giant.
