This 1822 Parisian publication, "C. Plinii Caecilii Secundi Epistolarum Libri Decem et Panegyricus," Volume 1, is a scholarly edition of Pliny the Younger's letters and the Panegyricus (an oration praising the Roman Emperor Trajan). Edited by Nicolaus Eligius Lemaire, Professor of Latin Poetry, it builds upon the earlier Schäfer edition by incorporating a variety of textual readings and Lemaire's own annotations. The work provides a critical examination of Pliny's writings, offering insights into Roman society, politics, and culture during the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD, as well as the rhetorical style and historical significance of the Panegyricus. Lemaire's contribution aims to enhance the understanding and accessibility of Pliny's works for a learned audience.

Nicolaus Eligius Lemaire was a scholar and Professor of Latin Poetry in early 19th-century Paris, known for his work in editing and annotating classical Latin texts. His achievement, as exemplified by this edition of Pliny the Younger, lies in his dedication to textual scholarship and his efforts to provide readers with critical and insightful editions of classical authors. Lemaire's work involved careful examination of manuscripts, comparison of textual variants, and the provision of annotations to aid in understanding the language, historical context, and literary significance of the texts. His contributions to classical scholarship helped to further the study and appreciation of Latin literature during his time.
