The Flag Of America

“I always have the same thought when I look at the flag of the United States, for I know something of the history of the struggle of mankind for liberty. When I look at that flag it seems to me as if the white stripes were stripes of parchment upon which are written the rights of man, and the red stripes the streams of blood by which those rights have been made good. Then in the little blue firmament in the corner have swung out the starts of the States of the American Union. So, it is, as it were, a sort of floating charter that has come down to use from Runnymede, when men said, ‘We will not have masters; we will be a people, and we will seek our own liberty’ “.

"America's Greatness," published in 1931 by Wm. H. Wise & Co., is a collection of excerpts gathered from the works of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. The pamphlet likely presents Wilson's views on American identity, ideals, history, and the nation's role in the world. As suggested by the included quote about the American flag, the content likely emphasizes themes of liberty, democracy, and the principles upon which the United States was founded. The publication aims to inspire patriotism and a sense of national pride by highlighting Wilson's eloquent and idealistic perspectives on America's unique character and purpose.

Author and Achievements:

  • World War I Leadership: He led the United States into World War I, initially maintaining neutrality but ultimately intervening to "make the world safe for democracy."
  • Fourteen Points: Wilson articulated his Fourteen Points, a vision for post-war peace and international cooperation, which included the establishment of the League of Nations.
  • League of Nations: He was a key advocate for the League of Nations, believing it was essential for preventing future wars, although the U.S. Senate ultimately rejected American membership.
  • Intellectual and Academic Background: Prior to his political career, Wilson was an accomplished academic, serving as a professor and president of Princeton University, demonstrating his intellectual prowess and his ability to articulate complex ideas.
